CalMatters | "Applying for CalFresh food aid is complicated. California colleges are trying to make it easier"

CalMatters_CHPR_CalFresh Study

CalMatters cited a report by researchers with the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health's UCLA Center for Health Policy Research that found students at California's public universities and colleges face problems accessing federal and state food assistance programs, including California's state-run CalFresh program.

"High rates of food insecurity existed, with more than 70% of students at the California Community College (i.e., LAMC) reporting being food insecure, followed by more than half of CSU students and 42% of UC students."

The report - SNAP on College Campuses: Findings and Recommendations to Address Food Insecurity - was published in January; the authors include Dr. Susan H. Babey, Dr. AJ Scheiter, Dr. Tabashir Z. Nobari, Dr. Joelle Wolstein, and researchers Jarrod Erdman and Sarah Stigers, all with the Center for Health Policy Research (CHPR).
